Challenges to the Conservation of Biodiversity on Small Islands: The Case of the Maltese Islands

چکیده

The conservation of biodiversity on small islands is fraught with challenges, most of which do not apply to mainland areas, and which are borne of characteristics unique to islands. These include a disproportionate coastal extent, anomalously high rates of endemicity and species richness, high degrees of genetic distinctiveness exhibited by biota as a result of their physical isolation. This is coupled to a high degree of anthropogenic disturbance facing island biota and to the high economic importance of coastal-based tourism on islands. This combination in turn translates in a pronounced fraction of island biota being considered as endangered and in islands being considered as biodiversity priorities. The Maltese Islands are located in the Mediterranean Basin, which in itself is already considered as a biodiversity hotspot, and present a case study of intense anthropogenic impacts on a rich biodiversity.

Phylogeny of gazelles in some islands of Iran based on mtDNA sequences: Species identification and implications for conservation

Different species of gazelles are among the most endangered mammals on the Asian steppes and occur in the central, southern and northwestern regions of Iran. The previous conservation efforts in this region have been incomplete due to confusion about the phylogenetic relationship among various populations. So that, different conservation programs such as ex-situ breeding and transfer of captive...

A Survey of Landscape Metrics and Land-use/land-cover Structures on Urban Heat Islands Surface: A Case Study on Urmia City, Iran

Urbanization is developing unprecedentedly on a global scale. One of the chief repercussions of urbanization, caused by man-made alterations in land-use/land-cover (LULC), is the formation of urban heat islands. Albeit, differences among landscape structures and its accompanied effects on the environment are mostly neglected. Accordingly, the main objective of this study is to survey the variou...
